Happy new year! After a number of requests from friends and colleagues, I’m attempting a food blog, with cautious optimism. I haven’t made a website or blog in a very long time, so please pardon the dust as I get acquainted with how all this works and gradually begin to spruce things up. I’m looking forward to seeing how this progresses.

I don’t have a recipe for you today, but it’s important to me to get in the habit of making a post every day, so I definitely wanted to take the first step by sharing what we made last night, on New Year’s Eve.
Since my wife and I moved to Detroit in 2020, we’ve developed a new tradition for NYE where we stay in, make surf and turf, and eat it in our pajamas before watching the countdown. Last night was no different.

I have to apologize for the quality of these photos. That’s something that will get better too. I realize this doesn’t look very appetizing, but it was one of our favorite meals we’ve ever made and the flavor was stunning. It’s a large, bacon-wrapped, crab-stuffed filet mignon, with buttery herbed potatoes and sauteed garlic spinach. The steak (and some of the potatoes) are covered in a whiskey-peppercorn sauce that was really outstanding.
I will make this again later in the year, and take better photos, and also document the process so you can do it at home, too.
Jazz, like food, is one of my main passions, so with each post, I’ll be sharing a jazz recording to go along with the dish. Today, since it’s the first day of the year, I thought I’d start with something seasonal. Here’s my very favorite saxophonist, Stan Getz, with the great Brazilian guitarist Laurindo Almeida, playing a gorgeous tune called “Winter Moon.”
